March 11 – Scripture of the Day

The scripture that stood out to me today was Numbers 34:1-15, because it describes the boundaries of the area of land the Lord was giving to Israel.

It reads, “Then the Lord said to Moses, 2 “Give these instructions to the Israelites: When you come into the land of Canaan, which I am giving you as your special possession, these will be the boundaries. 3 The southern portion of your country will extend from the wilderness of Zin, along the edge of Edom. The southern boundary will begin on the east at the Dead Sea.[a] 4 It will then run south past Scorpion Pass[b] in the direction of Zin. Its southernmost point will be Kadesh-barnea, from which it will go to Hazar-addar, and on to Azmon. 5 From Azmon the boundary will turn toward the Brook of Egypt and end at the Mediterranean Sea.[c]

6 “Your western boundary will be the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea.

7 “Your northern boundary will begin at the Mediterranean Sea and run east to Mount Hor, 8 then to Lebo-hamath, and on through Zedad 9 and Ziphron to Hazar-enan. This will be your northern boundary.

10 “The eastern boundary will start at Hazar-enan and run south to Shepham, 11 then down to Riblah on the east side of Ain. From there the boundary will run down along the eastern edge of the Sea of Galilee,[d] 12 and then along the Jordan River to the Dead Sea. These are the boundaries of your land.”

13 Then Moses told the Israelites, “This territory is the homeland you are to divide among yourselves by sacred lot. The Lord has commanded that the land be divided among the nine and a half remaining tribes. 14 The families of the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh have already received their grants of land 15 on the east side of the Jordan River, across from Jericho toward the sunrise.”

March 9 – Scripture of the Day

The scripture that stood out to me today was Numbers 30:1-2 which says, “Then Moses summoned the leaders of the tribes of Israel and told them, “This is what the Lord has commanded: A man who makes a vow to the Lord or makes a pledge under oath must never break it. He must do exactly what he said he would do.”

Today’s reading included the commissioning of Joshua by Moses to lead the people. The passage that stood out to me was Numbers 27:18-19 which says, “The Lord replied, “Take Joshua son of Nun, who has the Spirit in him, and lay your hands on him. Present him to Eleazar the priest before the whole community, and publicly commission him to lead the people.”

Also included were instructions from the Lord to Moses concerning:

  • Daily Offerings
  • Sabbath Offerings
  • Monthly Offerings
  • Offerings for Passover
  • Offerings for the Festival of Harvest
  • Offerings for the Festival of Trumpets
  • Offerings for the Day of Atonement

March 7 – Scripture of the Day

Today’s reading included some of the Israelites sleeping with Moabite women, and as a result beginning to worship Baal. The result was the death of 24,000 Israelites. Next, there was another census of all the Israelite men age 20 and older. The verse that stood out to me today was Numbers 26:64-65 which says, “Not one person on this list had been among those listed in the previous registration taken by Moses and Aaron in the wilderness of Sinai. For the Lord had said of them, “They will all die in the wilderness.” Not one of them survived except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.”

March 6 – Scripture of the Day

Today’s reading includes the story of the talking donkey.

A talking donkey?

Yup. And its not Donkey in Shrek. Here’s the deal.

Israel is continuing its journey on the wilderness after God delivered them from Egypt, but before the enter the promised land. Balak, the Moabite king, learns that the Israelites are near by, knows they have defeated many enemies, and is scared. So he sends for Balaam, who Balak wants to curse Israel.

Balak eventually agrees to go with Balak’s servants, but the Lord is trying to get Balak’s attention. God sends and angel to block the road where Balak is traveling. The donkey sees the angel, but Balak does not.

Three times the donkey stops, or walks off the road. Three times Balak beats the donkey to get back on the road.

Then the Lord makes the donkey talk to Balak in Numbers 22:28. “What have I done to you that deserves you beating me these three times?” the donkey says to Balak.

After this exchange, the Lord opens Balak’s eyes and he too can see the angel of the Lord in the road. Balak falls down and asks forgiveness from the Lord.

Interesting story.

It makes me realize that so often in our lives we are going about what we believe we are supposed to be doing, but still not fully paying attention. Still not fully being obedient to the Lord.

And some of us are so oblivious, so self-involved, or perhaps just so distracted that God needs to do something out of the ordinary to get our attention.

A talking donkey would do it.

But it’s a good reminder for me that I need to be more aware, more purposely seeking out the Lord’s will and wisdom. Each and every day I need to be listening to the Lord, and seeking to do his will.

Lord, forgive me and help me live the life you have prepared for me!

March 4 – Scripture of the Day

The scripture that stood out to me today was Numbers 16:31-35 which says, “31 He had hardly finished speaking the words when the ground suddenly split open beneath them. 32 The earth opened its mouth and swallowed the men, along with their households and all their followers who were standing with them, and everything they owned. 33 So they went down alive into the grave, along with all their belongings. The earth closed over them, and they all vanished from among the people of Israel. 34 All the people around them fled when they heard their screams. “The earth will swallow us, too!” they cried. 35 Then fire blazed forth from the Lord and burned up the 250 men who were offering incense.”
